1.“Misogyny”seemsastraightforwardword.Indictionaries,itis“hatredofwomen”.InitsetymologyaretheGreekverbmisein,tohate,andgyne,women.Theword,likethesentiment,hasbeenaroundforalongtime.Euripides,anancientGreekplaywright,wascalledamisogynes,orwoman-hater.(“Well,inhistragedies,yes,”hispeerSophoclesissaidtohavequipped,“butinbedatanyratehewasaphilogynes.”)Thefirstknownuseof“misogynist”inEnglishisfrom—byafemalegroupcounter-attackingagainstascreedcalled“TheArraignmentofLewd,Idle,Froward[sic],andUnconstantWomen”.
